Elaine Elder has painted her pets in almost every medium from oils to charcoals. With a simple, recognizable design in mind, she turned to the computer for her license plate inspiration. The result was a graphically drawn visual symbol of cats in Georgia. The black color of the cat in this design in drawn in honor of the Elder family’s two-year old rescued cat, named Salem. The artist found this tiny, whining kitten in the back of a hay truck while buying supplies for her horses. She put him in her shirt pocket, and they became fast friends. Two years later, Salem has become a vital member of an extended family, which includes cats, dogs, rabbits, horses, chickens, pigeons, and ducks!

Learning of the contest from The Farmers’ and Consumers’ Market Bulletin, illustrator Phill Flanders drew this design in honor of Mia, his favorite feline friend. Adopted as a young adult by the Flanders family, Mia has proven to be a dignified yet mischievous lady. The connecting points of feline personality are captured in this portrayal of a friendly animal, in a life stage between kitten and adulthood. Playfulness and dignity all wrapped up in orange – Mia is a treasure!

A 14 year old freshman at Northview High School Yash Joshi has won numerous art competitions in the past few years and distinguished himself as an upcoming young artist. Yash chose gouache as his medium for this feline design because it is challenging, unique, and also happens to be his favorite medium. This playful cat represents curiosity and how one should discover new boundaries. Since the peach is the symbol of our great state, it is incorporated it in the picture to make the tag easy to define as Georgian!

Brenda McDaniel has worked as an artist, groomer, and veterinarian’s technician, giving her years of cat observation experience. Painted as a memorial to a dear deceased feline friend, this design is based on a cat named Pendleton, after Terry Pendelton of the Atlanta Braves baseball franchise. Pendleton was a very wise and noble cat and the artist tried to capture his personality in this painting, especially his eyes. The spay/neuter message in this painting is: “Be Wise — Spay or Neuter.” We think Pendleton would approve!

As the wife of a veterinarian, Carolyn Ritter has seen her share of cats in need and rescued many of them. As an artist, she strives to portray the universal feline that could be anybody’s favorite cat. Aptly titled, “Queen of Spays,” this design is a memorial to the artist’s own 16-year old feline friend, Kiki. As a lifelong companion of the Ritter family, Kiki transformed from a tiny rescued stray to a buddy who provided many years of love and laughter. The artist told us that Kiki would have concealed the fact that she would be honored to be on the Georgia spay and neuter license plate.
